Why the Somerset Business Expo mattered so much to us

Tuesday 23rd June, 2026

Some ideas arrive with a neat plan, a tidy budget and a reassuring sense of certainty.

The Somerset Business Expo was not one of those ideas.

If you have listened to our podcast, you may already know the story. Last year, Matt and Roger headed down to an event in Exeter with a question hanging in the air. Could we really do this? Could we really create something on a bigger scale, something bold enough to reflect the ambition of Somerset businesses and useful enough to make a real difference?

There was even a slight hope, if we are honest, that the trip might talk them out of it.

Instead, somewhere on the drive home, the opposite happened.

Between the usual back and forth, the practical concerns and the inevitable “are we slightly mad?” moments, something clicked. Somerset businesses were crying out for an event like this. Not just another date in the diary, but a genuine platform. A day that feels full of energy, opportunity and pride in what our business community has to offer.

That is exactly what the Somerset Business Expo meant to us.

At the Chamber, we often talk about our role in 3 simple words: Connect, Promote, Support.

This event brought all 3 together in one place.

It was about connecting businesses with customers, collaborators, suppliers, decision makers and fresh opportunities.

It was about promoting the brilliant range of talent, ideas and enterprise we have right here in Somerset, from well established firms to ambitious newer businesses ready to make their mark.

And it was about supporting local businesses with practical workshops, advice, conversations and visibility that could help them move forward with more confidence.

In many ways, the Expo felt like a natural next step in the Chamber’s own journey too.

Over the past few years, we have seen huge growth. Since Covid, we have worked hard to rebuild, strengthen and expand what the Chamber can offer. We have grown our membership, evolved our identity through the rebrand from Bridgwater Chamber of Commerce to Sedgemoor Chamber of Commerce, and kept asking ourselves the same question: how do we do more for the businesses we serve?

The Somerset Business Expo was one answer to that question.

It was our way of creating a bigger day, a bigger draw and a bigger opportunity for the local business community. It was about lifting the spotlight higher and wider, so more people could see just how much is happening here.

And yes, it was ambitious. Very ambitious.

But then again, so are the businesses we represent.

We are incredibly proud of what has been built over the last few years, and even more proud of what this event became. The move to Somerset Business Expo was not just a change of name. It was a reflection of growth, confidence and belief in what this business community deserves.

A bigger platform. A stronger presence. A day that said Somerset means business.

We had a feeling, on that drive back from Exeter, that this could be something special.

Now, having seen it come to life, we are incredibly proud of what was achieved.

The Somerset Business Expo was a real reflection of the ambition, energy and talent across our local business community, and we hope everyone who came along left feeling that too.

If you joined us on the day, thank you for being part of it. And if you were not there this time, take a look at the video and photos and see what you missed. We think they capture exactly why this event mattered, and why we are so excited about what it can continue to become for Somerset businesses.
