Temporary schemes come to an end

Friday 22nd January, 2021

Following the latest lockdown and closure of non-essential retail, schemes introduced to support social distancing and the reopening of high streets in two Somerset towns are to end.

Temporary schemes introduced last summer in Yeovil and Bridgwater, featuring a pedestrianised zone and one-way system respectively, were funded by Government and overseen by Somerset’s Active Travel Group, which represents the five local councils, police and public health.

Yeovil’s scheme ends on Friday 29 January and Bridgwater’s today, Friday 22 January.

The schemes were among a number set up in towns across Somerset. Most have now ended.

A second funding block amounting to just over £450k for Somerset, was recently announced by the Government.

This funding is set up to enable more permanent measures to support walking and cycling in Somerset and an announcement will be made soon regarding which schemes will be pursued.

The original schemes which are being discontinued are:

  • Yeovil, Middle and High Street – pedestrianisation – this will allow for permanent public space improvements to commence in Westminster Street as part of the town centre regeneration plans which will also, in later phases, involve accessibility improvements in Middle Street and High Street among other town centre areas.
  • Bridgwater, Eastover/East Quay/Salmon Parade – pedestrianisation/ one-way system, although implementing a permanent one-way system in Eastover remains a key aspiration for Sedgemoor District Council.

Once a formal announcement is made on the new schemes, consultation will follow with communities and businesses. You can read about this in more detail on the Somerset County Council website
