Successful Launch of Bridgwater Chamber of Commerce’s Retail Group

Friday 11th August, 2023

The inaugural meeting of the Bridgwater Retail Group, a dynamic initiative by the Bridgwater Chamber of Commerce, took place on August 10th with success. Hosted in collaboration with local retailer Rose Stacey from Timeless Images, the event saw the enthusiastic participation of local retailers, all eager to contribute to the growth and enhancement of the retail industry in Bridgwater.

The gathering fostered a convivial atmosphere, encouraging open and candid discussions among attendees. A pivotal concern that emerged was the issue of anti-social behaviour, specifically with young people, in the town centre. Recognising its detrimental impact on retailers and town footfall, attendees emphasised the need to engage with young people proactively, offering them recreational activities to divert their energies. The meeting underscored the necessity to promote youth provisions available in Bridgwater, acknowledging the importance of investment in these initiatives.

Speeding vehicles within the town centre also drew attention, prompting suggestions for a 20mph limit to enhance safety and create a more pleasant shopping environment. Addressing practical concerns, the meeting explored the feasibility of allowing retailers to acquire permits for loading and unloading outside their shops, as well as the creation of an online hub for information on parking, attractions, and information about the town.

Diogo Rodrigues, Chamber Manager, was pleased with the event’s outcome, stating, “The engagement and collaborative spirit shown by our local retailers at this inaugural meeting are truly promising. We are committed to nurturing this platform for impactful dialogue and positive action within the retail sector.”

The Bridgwater Chamber of Commerce will now raise the various issues and suggestions made at the meeting with local stakeholders on behalf of retailers. The success of the first meeting lays the foundation for future endeavours and retailers are encouraged to join the next gathering in October to continue shaping the future of Bridgwater’s retail landscape.
