Key cycle link set to be delivered in Bridgwater

Monday 29th April, 2019

Improvements to cycle and footway provision between the Wylds Rd/ The Drove junction and the A39 Bath Road, Bridgwater are set to begin this month.

Starting on Monday 7 May, the work forms part of The Bridgwater Way project which is delivering a host of travel improvements to existing roads and junctions, as well as miles of new and improved routes for pedestrians and cyclists across the town and surrounding areas.

The improvements will provide a key safe link to connect the Wylds Road/ The Drove junction to the A39 Bath Road. This will make cross-town travel easier and will specifically benefit young people travelling to and from Bridgwater College and Chilton Trinity School.

Separate County Council works to improve the pavement on Bristol Road and Wales & West Utility works to replace the gas main under Wylds Road also need to take place.
In order to minimise disruption, these three schemes have been strategically planned to be delivered at the same time.

From 7 May until 28 June, The Drove will be open to westbound traffic only between the A38 Bristol Road junction and the Wylds Road / The Drove junction. This will allow the new cycleway to be constructed safely.
Also starting on 7 May until 14 June, Wylds Road will be open to northbound traffic only between the Wylds Road / The Drove junction and the A38 Bristol Road. This is for the gas main replacement works.

From 28 May to 31 May, the A38 Bristol Road will be open to southbound traffic only, with northbound traffic diverted along the Drove and Wylds Road. This will allow the footway works to take place.

The one-way system will only be in place when required and two-way traffic flow will be restored wherever possible.
A spokesman for Somerset County Council said: “We always try to keep roads open if we can but we also have to keep the travelling public and our workforce safe while carrying out essential works.
“Here we have three schemes where lane closures are unavoidable so we’ve combined the works into one scheme and brought in a one-way system to keep traffic moving and minimise disruption as much as possible.”
Further information including a combined Q&A sheet with drawings showing the one-way system can be found at www.travelsomerset.co.uk/TheDrove.
