Update on Bridgwater Tidal Barrier

Friday 16th January, 2026

Construction is already well underway on the tidal barrier site and on downstream flood defences. The scheme remains vital to protecting homes, businesses and critical infrastructure in and around Bridgwater.

As part of the responsible delivery of major public infrastructure, the Environment Agency has carried out a Design Efficiency Review to make sure the scheme remains affordable, deliverable and represents best value for money in the current economic climate, while continuing to deliver the same level of flood protection.

The review was introduced to respond to inflation and wider global market pressures on materials, energy and labour, to ensure responsible use of public funds, and to look at how newer technology and design options could reduce long term operational and maintenance costs.

The review has now concluded that the scheme will move forward with a simplified, more functional tidal barrier superstructure. This refined design is intended to be cost efficient and easier to construct, operate and maintain, while still providing a safe, resilient structure with a strong architectural presence in the landscape.

Crucially, the level of flood risk reduction is unchanged. The scheme will continue to protect around 12,800 homes and businesses. Construction of the barrier substructure and the downstream flood defences is already underway and continues as planned.

The review work is ongoing. Alongside the barrier design changes, further cost refinements are being considered, including the operational building and landscape design. Once these elements are finalised, the project will publish an updated timeline later in 2026.

Local businesses and residents can find more about the review, see an image of the concept design and find answers to frequently asked questions on the BTB Scheme website.

The project team is also holding public drop in sessions to share recent progress and the outcomes of the review, and to answer questions:

  • Wednesday the 21st of January Chilton Trinity Village Hall, Chilton Trinity, Bridgwater, TA6 4PL 5pm to 8pm
  • Friday the 23rd of January Angel Place Shopping Centre, 25 Angel Crescent, Bridgwater, TA6 3TQ 10am to 12pm

No booking is required, attendees are welcome to drop in at any time during the session.

Anyone with further questions can contact the project team by emailing Bridgwater.Barrier@environment-agency.gov.uk
