Crime Crackdown: Bridgwater Chamber Urges Swift Action

In a recent letter addressed to Somerset Council and Avon & Somerset Police, the Bridgwater Chamber of Commerce emphasised the critical need for action to address prevalent issues of anti-social behaviour and public drinking in the town centre.

Recognising the detrimental impact of these issues on both the safety and economic vitality of the town centre, the Chamber underscored the importance of collaborative efforts to combat them effectively. Through discussions facilitated by the Chamber with Police and Crime Commissioner Mark Shelford, it has become evident that a Public Space Protection Order (PSPO) is an essential measure to alleviate these concerns.

Bridgwater Chamber Manager Diogo Rodrigues said , “Past experiences with a PSPO have demonstrated its effectiveness in curbing anti-social behaviour and fostering a sense of security among residents and visitors. Therefore, the Chamber firmly believes that the reintroduction of a PSPO will provide much-needed relief to town centre businesses and create a safer, more welcoming environment for all”.

The Chamber also expressed its readiness to act as a conduit between businesses and decision-makers, advocating for ongoing communication and collaboration to address the challenges facing the town centre effectively.
