Somerset Food Trail

Friday 26th August, 2022

Press Release from Sedgemoor District Council

Following on from the success of the inaugural Somerset Food Trail in July, Sedgemoor District Council are pleased to be investing a further £5,000 so that the event can be run again next year – even bigger and better.

The trail is a one-week festival during the summer, led by the Wells Food Network.   People from across Somerset as well as visitors had a bumper week (15th – 24th July) with over sixty businesses who opened their farms, shops, pubs, restaurants or premises to visitors.   All of the local and sustainable business can now be found in directory that visitors and residents can use all the year.

The Food Trail gives visitors to the region a better understanding of how our food is produced and the many benefits of buying local, as well as encouraging greater support for local food producers.

The Somerset Food Trail helps promote local, sustainable food practices, which aligns with the SDC Climate Emergency Strategy. As part of Sedgemoor District Council’s corporate priority to work towards reaching net zero carbon emissions by 2030, the council supported the trail by providing an initial £5,000 of funding.

This funding from SDC will be put towards the creation of promotional material and developing a Somerset Trails app.

Within Sedgemoor, a cluster of fifteen organisations in Wedmore and eight organisations in south Sedgemoor opened their doors to visitors to showcase the sustainable food practices available in the region.  Additional, due to careful planning, the businesses were arranged in such a way that visitors could get to each venue on foot or by bike.
