NATIONAL CHILDREN’S CARNIVAL WEEK IN BRIDGWATER

Monday 26th July, 2021

Children across the UK were able to experience the excitement and enjoyment of carnival during the National Children’s Carnival Week in July.

At Somerset Bridge Primary School in Bridgwater the whole school took part and thoroughly enjoyed themselves designing and creating their own carnival masks, headdresses, collars and squibs.  They then proudly donned their brand new carnival regalia and paraded around the school grounds, dancing and performing to the sounds of typical carnival music.

This was truly a very poignant moment for all concerned as, for the first time in 18 months, the whole school was able to join together in one activity, Covid-19 having disrupted normal school activities such as assemblies, sports says and school trips during this period.  A real cause for celebration therefore and there is no better way to celebrate than through carnival.

Within Sedgemoor, children at Northgate Primary School and Brent Knoll Primary School also took part in this inaugural National Children’s Carnival Week and the fun and excitement they all enjoyed is certain to make this an annual event.

For this special national event, Bridgwater Carnival organisers provided each school with information packs and ideas to help the children create their own carnival costume, and judging by the results this was very much appreciated by those who took part.

Bridgwater Carnival has been offering carnival related activities to local schools for almost 10 years and these usually take place during the Autumn term in the period leading up to the traditional annual carnival.  So any school missing out on the July celebrations will still be able to enjoy carnival later in the year.
