The latest newsletter from the Bridgwater Tidal Barrier Scheme confirms that detailed design of the barrier’s superstructure is now substantially complete, allowing construction of its three towers to begin in spring 2027.
Following a Design Efficiency Review, the towers will stand at around 15 metres, roughly 10 metres lower than planned, with a simpler design that is easier to maintain over its 100-year design life. The Environment Agency has confirmed the review does not reduce the approved scheme cost.
On site, the barrier’s foundations are taking shape within three cofferdams in the River Parrett, while downstream defences at Combwich, Pawlett and Chilton Trinity are nearing completion. For Bridgwater’s businesses and communities, the scheme is designed to reduce tidal flood risk, protecting homes, jobs and the town’s long-term economic confidence.
The edition also highlights the team’s work with schools and the community, including a new LEGO flood model that helps explain how the barrier works, and fully booked public site visits all summer.
