Somerset employers: modern work experience reforms open a new route to future talent

Friday 21st August, 2026

From September 2026, schools are being encouraged to reform how they deliver work experience, with a stronger focus on giving pupils meaningful, real-world exposure to the workplace. For Somerset employers, that shift is likely to mean more requests for involvement, but it also opens up a genuine opportunity to shape the future workforce and raise the profile of their sector among young people.

Under the Government’s modern work experience approach, pupils are expected to benefit from 10 days of work experience by the time they leave school at 16. This includes employer-led activities during Years 7 to 9, giving younger pupils an early introduction to different sectors and careers, followed by more structured placements in Years 10 and 11 as pupils approach the end of compulsory education.

Why it matters for businesses

As schools and colleges develop this provision, Somerset employers may see an increase in requests to get involved, whether through short employer-led sessions, workplace visits or full placements. For businesses, that’s an opportunity worth taking seriously rather than simply accommodating.

Getting involved early gives employers a genuine say in building their own future talent pipeline, introducing young people to career paths they might not otherwise consider and helping address skills gaps before they become recruitment problems. It’s also a practical, low-cost way to demonstrate social value and support corporate responsibility goals, showing a real commitment to the next generation of the local workforce rather than just talking about it.

Get involved

Somerset businesses interested in supporting modern work experience, whether that’s hosting placements, running employer-led sessions, or simply finding out more about what’s involved, can get advice and support directly.
