Somerset Council Launches Long-Term Economic Strategy to Drive Growth and Opportunity Across the County

Tuesday 22nd July, 2025

Somerset Council has adopted a bold and forward-looking Economic Prosperity Strategy 2025–2045, setting out a clear vision for the future of Somerset’s economy.

The strategy outlines an ambitious 20-year plan for good growth – growth that supports fairness, protects the environment, and creates real opportunities for all. Backed by strong evidence and shaped by local partners, the plan focuses on Somerset’s strengths in low carbon energy, aerospace and defence, digital industries, advanced manufacturing, food and farming, tourism, and the creative sector.

Councillor David Woan, Associate Lead Member for Business Strategy, said:

“Somerset has so much to offer – from advanced manufacturing and innovation, to tourism, agriculture and green technology. This strategy is a starting point, not an end. Our message to businesses is clear: we are on your side, and we are building the conditions for long-term success.

While the opposition want every answer on day one, we are focused on delivery over decades. This is a framework for sustainable economic growth that puts Somerset’s strengths and people first.”

Councillor Mike Rigby, Lead Member for Economic Development Planning and Assets, added:

“This is not just a paper exercise. We are getting on with the job – unlocking employment land, investing in transport and digital infrastructure, and improving how planning works for business.

There’s no quick fix after years of underinvestment from national government, but this strategy sets out a practical and positive route forward. We’ll keep listening, keep adapting and keep delivering.”

Despite criticism from Conservative councillors that the strategy lacks detail, the Liberal Democrat-run administration has stressed that this is a strategy – not a list of projects – and that detailed delivery plans will follow, shaped by local input and robust data.

The Council’s approach puts local partnership front and centre. The strategy has been co-designed by the Somerset Growth Board – a partnership of business leaders, education providers, and public sector organisations – and will only succeed if everyone plays a part.

Key goals of the Somerset Economic Prosperity Strategy include:

  • Creating high-quality, well-paid jobs
  • Growing sustainable sectors with future potential
  • Making Somerset a hub for clean energy and green innovation
  • Supporting entrepreneurs and start-ups across all communities
  • Improving skills and opportunities for young people
  • Strengthening town centres and rural economies
  • Attracting investment and supporting existing businesses

Councillor Bill Revans, Leader of Somerset Council, said:

“This is a serious plan for Somerset’s long-term success. While others focus on party politics, we’re focused on delivery. We will continue to work with businesses, communities and residents to make this vision a reality. This strategy gives us the platform to work closely with partners across every sector to unlock potential. We also know delivery matters – and that’s why Somerset Council is focused on securing the right infrastructure, investment and local planning tools to make things happen.”
