S Roberts Group unveil commemorative charcoal

drawing to VIPs at 95th anniversary celebrations

FAMILY-RUN Somerset-based environmental company S Roberts Group has marked its 95th anniversary with a celebratory VIP tea party and by unveiling a special charcoal drawing of its founder (April 2, 2025).

The award-winning Bridgwater company began in 1930 when Frederick Samuel Roberts, known as ‘Sam’, started selling coal and has since grown to a multi-million-pound business.

Vicky Owens, who is one of Sam’s granddaughters and the company’s Asbestos & Demolition Director, says: “We’re delighted to be celebrating this momentous occasion and to be sharing it with our highly valued customers, our VIPs and our amazing team, as well as our brilliant friends and family. Run by myself and my sister Beccy Roberts, we’re so incredibly proud to have reached this fabulous milestone and to be the third generation at the helm.

“We’re touched so many people were able to come and help us celebrate our 95th anniversary. The special drawing of Sam that we commissioned for the occasion is particularly poignant, as it’s in charcoal, and Sam started the business as a coal merchant.”

After Sam passed away his 19-year-old son, Terry, took over and helped Roberts grow into the thriving family-run business it is today.

When Terry retired in 2004, his daughters Vicky and Beccy were tasked with ensuring the company’s survival for the 21st century.

Director of Waste Management, Beccy, says: “It was wonderful to welcome our VIPs – Bridgwater Mayor, Councillor Jacqui Solomon, Managing Director of Somerset Chamber of Commerce, David Crew, Bridgwater Chamber of Commerce General Manager, Roger Smith and Somerset Lord Lieutenant (Deputy), Clinton Rogers, representing the King, and customers – to our site to celebrate with us.

“We gave them a brief history of the business and a tour, unveiled the artwork and cut a special anniversary cake, before enjoying an afternoon tea together.”

S Roberts Group holds its environmental considerations and solutions at the core of its business and adheres to these when advising and making decisions on the management of waste, resources, emissions and transport.

The company also offers skip, tipper and plant hire, bulk earth moving, grab hire, recycled aggregates, topsoil and demolition services for domestic and commercial clients across the South West.
