Bridgwater sits on the estuary of the River Parrett, around 17 km upstream from the Severn Estuary. Much of the town and surrounding area lies below high tide level, placing around 12,800 homes and businesses and critical infrastructure at risk of tidal flooding.
The Bridgwater Tidal Barrier Scheme is a nationally significant flood risk reduction project that will better protect Bridgwater and surrounding communities from tidal flooding.
For local businesses, the scheme provides long-term resilience and confidence, helping to safeguard jobs, assets and investment in the area.
Flood protection infrastructure plays a critical role in enabling sustainable growth, and the scheme forms part of the UK’s wider effort to build climate resilience and strengthen national infrastructure, helping communities and businesses prepare for more frequent extreme weather events.
What the scheme includes
The scheme comprises three key elements:
The tidal barrier
A large gate structure across the River Parrett between Express Park and Chilton Trinity. Two vertical lift gates will close during tidal surges to prevent floodwater travelling upstream and overtopping defences.

Downstream flood defences
Improvements to existing defences and new secondary defences downstream of the barrier will help protect communities including Combwich, Chilton Trinity and Pawlett, as well as key infrastructure such as the A38.

Fish and eel passes
Upgrades to up to 12 fish and eel passes on the Rivers Parrett and Tone will support migratory species and enhance biodiversity.
Why the scheme matters for businesses
Flooding can have significant impacts on local economies, from damage to commercial property and stock to disruption of supply chains, transport routes and workforce access.
By reducing flood risk, the scheme will help businesses:
- Safeguard people and livelihoods
Reducing the risk to employees and customers from tidal flooding. - Protect assets and premises
Lowering the likelihood of damage to commercial properties, equipment and stock. - Support business continuity
Helping ensure essential infrastructure, utilities and transport networks remain operational during severe weather events. - Increase investor confidence
Lower flood risk can strengthen business confidence and make the area more attractive to investors and entrepreneurs.
Over time, reduced flood risk may also help lower insurance costs for some businesses and support continued economic growth across Bridgwater and the wider area.
Supporting a thriving local area
Beyond flood risk reduction, the scheme will contribute to improvements across the local environment and public spaces. New landscaping around the scheme area, will help make the area more attractive to live and work in.
A new cycle and pedestrian crossing associated with the barrier will improve connectivity across the river.
Together, these improvements will support a greener, healthier and more attractive environment for residents, workers and visitors.
Progress and opportunities
Construction of the scheme began in early 2023 following several years of surveys and preparatory work. During 2025 and into 2026, significant progress has already been made on site, with works underway on elements of the barrier and associated flood defences.
The construction phase is also creating opportunities for the local economy. The project team, including contractor Kier Group, is prioritising local suppliers where possible and supporting skills development through engagement with schools, colleges and training providers.
This includes promoting careers in engineering, construction and environmental management through school visits, site tours and work experience opportunities.

Looking ahead
By reducing flood risk and strengthening infrastructure resilience, the Bridgwater Tidal Barrier Scheme will help create the conditions for long-term economic growth.
The project aims to protect communities, support businesses and contribute to a more resilient and sustainable future for Bridgwater and the surrounding area.
